Angela Cooper Brathwaite

Angela holds a PhD, Nursing (University of Toronto) and a Master of Nursing (University of Manitoba). She has national and international experience in public health, maternal-child, mental health and community health nursing as well as academic and clinical teaching experience. She worked as a staff  nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner,  director of nursing, program manager and assistant professor. Currently, an adjunct professor at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), she teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Awards and scholarships: University of Toronto Distinguished Alumnus Award (2007); Service Excellence Award, Injury Prevention from the Regional Municipality of Durham (2007); RNAO Merit Award (2015); Leadership Awards in Political Action (2013) and Nursing Administration (2011). Angela was the first president of  International Nursing Interest Group (INIG)and served as board director (1996-1998) and (2014-Present).

Additionally, she served on the Nursing Research Interest Group (NRIG) executive committee and Durham Northumberland chapter as a policy and political action officer. Here she facilitated Take Your MPP To Work and Breakfast and Queen’s Park on the Road events. Angela has conducted and published many research studies in staff development, cultural competence and chronic disease prevention (diabetes).

Angela’s nursing philosophy: Every nurse is a leader, teacher, advocate, and change agent, contributing to the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of patients/families through clinical practice, education, research and administration. She believes nurses make a difference in the lives of patients/families, students, staff, and co-workers. The President-Elect position provides another opportunity for her passion to advance nursing and health-care systems provincially and internationally.
