About the Task Force:
RNAO is the professional association representing registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing students in Ontario. Our mission is to advocate for healthy public policy, promote excellence in nursing practice, and empower nurses to actively influence and shape decisions that affect the profession and the public they serve. To that end, the NP Task Force: Vision for Tomorrow was announced by CEO Doris Grinspun at RNAO’s 94th Annual General Meeting in April 2019 to address the current gaps in access to care for the people of Ontario. The work of the task force began with a mandate to optimize the NP role in an integrated system, informed by the Quadruple Aim and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Objectives for the task force soon followed:
- Highlight key roles and sectors of NP utilization, in Ontario, including the extent of utilization
- Propose medium and long-term strategies for fully integrating NPs across sectors and domains of practice (i.e. clinical practice, research, education, policy and administration)
- Identify current facilitators and barriers to NP role optimization, in order to advance timely access to care and improve quality of care for patients in Ontario
- Identify needed legislative and practice changes to remove barriers to NP integration into the health system in Ontario, linking to implications for national and international NP practice
- Recommend ways in which findings can be applied to other health care contexts and systems
Recommendations:
Environmental and literature scans were undertaken in order to identify where NPs were being used to their full scope, as well as facilitators and barriers to the integration and optimization of the NP role across settings. We were able to identify several themes based on the scan, and used this evidence in conjunction with input from our expert panel and stakeholders in order to build the following recommendations.
