Status: Hopeful
Name:
Tammie McParland
Credentials:
RN, PhD

Tammie graduated from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing in 1980 with a Diploma in nursing. Her passion for education has led her to obtain her BScN; MN; and finally a PhD in Education (specialization in Nursing Education).

Tammie has taught at several colleges, and is now an assistant professor at Nipissing University. She has been instrumental in developing educational curricula for other nursing focused programs such as Telehealth Ontario, the Victoria Order of Nurses and OSCE assessment of internationally educated nurses.

Tammie is an advocate of innovative learning - both her MN and PhD were completed in an online environment, and she is a founding member of the Ontario Simulation Alliance, created out of collaboration between colleges and universities in Ontario promoting best practices in simulation education. She is currently completing a certification as a Nurse Educator through the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing online.

In addition to the RNAO, Tammie belongs to several associations: Sigma Theta Tau International (Lambda Pi chapter), International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation & Learning (INACSL), Ontario Simulation Alliance, SimOne, and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Tammie believes that at its heart, nursing is about education. Nurses commit to lifelong education to ensure the health and well being of their patients. Nurses must, therefore, be passionate about how education empowers and impacts nursing. Tammie understands the role education plays in all levels of nursing, and is cognizant of the role she plays, both as nurse and educator, in contributing to this relationship.
