Salma received her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and her Masters of Sciences in Nursing from the University of Ottawa. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies in public policy and administration (health policy concentration). Her dissertation topic is exploring the lived experiences of immigrant women with encounters with the health-care system at the intersection of sex, gender, ethnicity, and immigration in their lives.
Salma has more than 30 years of national and international experience in nursing in various domains. She has been involved in several regional, provincial, and national projects, including the development panels of two RNAO best practice guidelines, and as a senior nurse consultant for content and marketing of NurseONE with the Canadian Nurses Association. She has also presented at numerous regional, provincial, national and international conferences and meetings. These include presentations as invited faculty at RNAO institutes.
Salma is currently the project manager overseeing the implementation of professional models of patient care at The Ottawa Hospital and with external partners spanning four provinces. Her portfolio includes the implementation, evaluation, and professional development (education) aspects of the projects.
Salma’s joint appointment with the University of Ottawa allows her to pursue her passion of advocating for health equity and social inclusion through teaching, research, and program development. As a diversity consultant, she believes in client-centered approaches and the value of each individual, regardless of differences or abilities. This has facilitated Salma’s ability to influence change at the individual and organizational levels.
