Eric Staples

I am an APN Consultant and one of the early NP pioneers in tertiary care. I graduated from the first post-graduate ACNP program in 1995 from University of Toronto, and have held Assistant Professor roles at Dalhousie University, implementing the APN stream in 1998; and McMaster University, as NP Coordinator and co-provincial professor in the 9-university Ontario Primary Health Care (PHC) NP consortium Program. I serve/have served on several Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) committees on NP education, preceptorship, prescribing, and the development of the position statement on doctoral education in Canada.

I have been a long-time member of the RNAO and currently a member of the NPIG Executive as NP-student liaison, and co-share social media and PPAN ENO roles. Also, I co-lead the NP Mentorship Program with RNAO. I have led/co-led several resolutions related to NP issues in Ontario, three of which for the June AGM.

My philosophy is that resolutions are key to raising the profile of important nursing, health and policy issues that engage the nursing profession in discussions relevant to all RNs, NPs and nursing students. In 2020 I completed the inaugural post-doctoral System Nurse Executive Leadership post-doctoral program from Case Western University. I was the lead developer and editor for the inaugural edition of Canadian Perspectives in Advanced Practice Nursing, in 2016, and a 2nd edition published in 2020 which has been adopted in NP programs across Canada. In 2022, I was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Nurses Association.
