"Care at the end of life: An introduction to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) and Palliative Care" is a workshop that features talks from Dr. Asha Gupta MD, CCFP (PC), Caroline Variath, RN, MN, and Ethicist Dianne Godkin, PhD.
"Care at the end of life: An introduction to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) and Palliative Care" is an interprofessional workshop that allows participants to gain an introduction to care at the end of life. Specifically exploring Medical Assistance in Dying, the featured speakers will provide an inteprofessional approach to this topic, by presenting from the physician, nurse, ethicist and family perspectives. The workshop is a great learning opportunity for community members, healthcare providers and students. Featured speakers include:
Dr. Asha Gupta, MD, CCFP (PC), trained at McMaster in family medicine and palliative care fellowship. She has been working at Credit Valley Hospital for the last 12 years as a full-time palliative care doctor.The first MAiD case at THP was one of her patients.
Caroline Variath, RN is a PhD student (collaborative in nursing & bioethics) at the University of Toronto and a member of faculty at the University of New Brunswick & Humber College Bachelor of Nursing program in Canada. She has worked clinically for 16 years in acute and critical care settings. More recently, she joined a team that provides medical assistance in dying. Her PhD thesis focuses on experiences with the loss of capacity to consent and its impact on accessing Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada.
Dr. Dianne Godkin, PhD completed a Post Graduate Clinical Ethics Fellowship with the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics in 2003. Dianne's work as a healthcare ethicist began in 2003 at the Centre for Clinical Ethics. In 2009, Dianne began working at Trillium Health Partners as an ethicist. Over the past year and a half, Dianne has been the Co-Chair of the Assistance in Dying Oversight Group at Trillium Health Partners and has been involved in the policies, procedures, and coordination of assistance in dying at Trillium Health Partners. Dianne's research interests include the use of qualitative methods to explore end-of-life decision making and advance care planning. She has published on a number of ethics-related issues including a book "Living Will, Living Well: Reflections on Preparing an Advance Directive."
