Building Capacity and Promoting Clinical Excellence in Long-Term Care

The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) has been funded by the provincial government for more than two decades to develop, disseminate, and actively support the uptake and sustainability of its Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and to evaluate their impact on patient, organizational, and health system outcomes. RNAO’s expertise in supporting the implementation of its BPGs all across Ontario, Canada and the world at large has fueled RNAO’s reputation as a leader in evidence-based nursing care.

Many long-term care (LTC) homes in Ontario have also implemented RNAO’s BPGs and optimized outcomes for residents, staff, and their health care facilities. To advance this work, RNAO has recently partnered with PointClickCare (PCC) to facilitate access to a digital version of the BPGs called Clinical Pathways.

By using these digitized Clinical Pathways—which are clinical decision support tools—nurses and other health providers in LTC homes will:

  1. Streamline care planning activities through the use of standardized evidence-based assessments and interventions presented in a user-friendly interface to support timely clinical decision making.
  2. Experience greater efficiency and reduced documentation burden.
  3. Realize better resident, staff and organizational outcomes.
  4. Satisfy the requirements of the proposed Fixing Long-Term Care Act 2021 for homes to:
    • respect the resident’s right to the ongoing and safe support by caregivers and be provided with care and services based on a palliative care philosophy;
    • provide high-quality evidence-based resident-centred care;
    • participate in a quality improvement initiative; and
    • implement a standardized resident and family/caregiver experience survey.

This webinar will provide an overview of RNAO’s BPG Clinical Pathways and the plan to launch a province-wide initiative in the Spring of 2022 to disseminate these digitized Clinical Pathways to Ontario’s LTC homes.
