Deborah Kane
Credentials:
RN, BScN, MScN, PhD

I have been a nurse for 33 years, and have worked in a variety of positions. Upon completion of my BScN in 1980 from the University of Windsor, I accepted a position in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at War Memorial Children’s Hospital, in London, Ontario. In 1983, I accepted a staff position with the London Middlesex Health Unit. My passion for health promotion and recognition of the importance of the social determinants of health were nurtured throughout my years as a public health nurse as I worked with diverse populations across the life-span. In 1987, I accepted a part-time position with the Neurology/ Pediatric Unit at the University Hospital, while I completed my Masters degree at the University of Western Ontario. I accepted a limited-term position with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Windsor in June 1989, and am currently an associate professor and the graduate and nurse practitioner program co-ordinator. I completed my PhD at the University of Michigan in 2003.

My personal and professional philosophy is best reflected in my research interest and experience, which, in the broadest context, has focused on work-life balance, workplace wellness, and workplace violence prevention. More specifically, my research has focused on initiatives and policies supporting healthy workplaces. My involvement as the policy and political action team leader with the Community Health Nurses' Initiatives Group convinced me of the importance of stepping beyond my comfort zone in order to make a difference. The past two years serving as the board representative for Region 1 has been an amazing experience. I welcome the opportunity to represent Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, and Lambton County for another term.
