Understanding the Current State of Nursing, the Environment, and Legislation

Join us on March 27th from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm for a presentation on Understanding the Current State of Nursing, the Environment, and Legislation.

Through the lens of the Social Determinants of Health, nurses are aware that the quality of the environment in which we live, work and play has an effect on human health.

Nurses may be concerned about the impact that changes to the built or natural environment around them may have on human health.

We wish to address concerns that may be impacting Ontario’s nurses related to recent legislation – the most pressing issue being the passing of Bill 23 by the Provincial government.

Nurses may have questions about the impact on conservation land/wetlands/Greenbelt, about impacts on addressing housing needs, and the potential impact of these and other factors on human health.

This event features speakers with topic experts/expertise, who come from diverse backgrounds. An interesting feature is that we have a subject matter expert with a background in nursing and environmental issues, as well as a subject matter expert with a background working with a Conservation Authority and now a National Greening Program. As environmental issues are holistic and multi-faceted, we see this diversity as a benefit.

This event will empower nurses by providing a better understanding of ways in which environments, built and natural, have an impact on health. We are also wishing to give nurses tools (language and practical knowledge) to engage with politicians and stakeholders, related to Bill 23 and any other environmental issues impacting health.

Presenters:
Josalyn Radcliffe (BScN, PhD Candidate at University of Waterloo)

Randall VanWagner (Head of National Greening Program, Tree Canada)
